My Love, I Would…

Purple Poetry // My Love, I Would…

Reflecting on the grand nature of romantic promises and the smaller — but infinitely more important — vows we make to our lovers, this free verse love poem is all of the things I would like to promise my husband and all of the vows that I have taken in spoken words and silence alike.

You see, my love,

I would like to promise you

A love

That would last forever.

A world where you would hurt

No more.

A haven in my arms.

I would like to promise you

A life

That would be easy forever.

Dreams in a soft bed, from which you would run

No more.

Warm nights in my arms.

I would like to promise you

All of this,

And much more.

But

I’m afraid,

I’m merely human.

As are you.

Forever

Is beyond my grasp.

The painless world,

Just out of my reach.
