The Drive

Purple Poetry // The Drive

This free verse poem about heartbreak was first published on dA, then Vocal, and now is making its way here as a feature in my Purple Poetry collection (soon to become the backbone of an anthology of the same name). It reflects on the quiet, agonizing return to an empty home after a relationship has ended.

The longest drive you make is the one you take alone

The sunset fills the sky with blood

Such a nice night to die

When a day feels like forever

And three years are gone in the blink of an eye

I know that no amount of time will take the hurt away

Crying in this empty house

Once a home

Waiting

For what may never be

Trying to make it all

Right

When one year

Five years

Ten years from now

I know I will wake and call out to him

A love this strong can’t be broken

It can’t be worn down by time

And I dread the day I have to see

Another on his arm

In his heart

Put on my brave face

And smile pretty for the cameras

While I cry inside

If this really is

Goodbye
